I am hoping many of you will be willing to read (/reread) this work of genius with me. I have to add, I am planning on aligning the novel to U2's album "Achtung Baby." Watch the trailer, and you'll know why.
After you watch, what did you think? Are you ready? Will it be "good"?

I see that you "hate spoilers," and I don't disagree. But I recently read Stanley Fish's really interesting piece in defense of spoilers, so I'm sharing it with you: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/category/stanley-fish/
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll be happy to join in conversation about Gatsby. I'm reading it for just the first time in about twenty years and liking it much more than in the past, when I was irritated by every character (including Nick, who a lot of readers defend, and certainly including Gatsby himself), to the point that I couldn't stand being in fictional rooms with them. This time, I enjoy putting my finger on the reasons I have such contempt for them each, and I am so in love with the writing, that I am recognizing the genius of it all for the first time. And my juniors dig it, too — though for different reasons. (A lot of the girls are swooning over Gatsby, especially now that they picture Leonarda in the role. He is perfectly cast.)
I will most certainly follow you on this journey, (surprise surprise). It seems just like yesterday that I read this book junior year in none other than your class. To sum up the experience it was truly eye-opening. As the years have passed I've read Fitzgerald's masterpiece more than several times and each time I find something more interesting, more fantastic! I think that's the beauty about The Great Gatsby and the novel is pure genius because it was F. Scott who layered it with such complex themes and motifs. I look forward to sharing each chapter with you and the interweb!
